Steve Bonnell

Manager of Strategic and Regional Assessments, Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency

Based in St. John’s, Steve Bonnell is involved in the planning and completion of a regional assessment for oil & gas exploratory drilling and associated activities off eastern Newfoundland under CEAA 2012, as well as having overall responsibility for the agency’s National Program of Strategic and Regional Assessments.

Steve has over 20 years of experience in planning, managing and completing environmental assessments (EAs) and associated environmental studies, consultation programs and permitting for proposed developments throughout Newfoundland and Labrador and elsewhere. This has included projects and other initiatives in the oil & gas, mining, electricity, transportation and other sectors, for which he has held various roles in government and in industry.

Steve Bonnell holds a PhD in EA from the University of Dundee, Scotland, as well as masters and bachelors degrees in geography from Memorial University. He has published and presented extensively on EA issues and approaches at national and international forums, and is an adjunct professor with the Department of Geography at Memorial University.
